Art and Fashion from the Edge
On view from
2/9/2012 - 3/29/2012
Avant-garde art and
fashion have long been associated with a lifestyle radically
expressive of rebellion, the rejection of complacency, and the
struggle to draw strength through vulnerability. Look | Sharp:
Art and Fashion from the Edge, is a group exhibition of works by
five New York-based artists displaying a selection of paintings,
photographs, clothing, and accessories evocative of danger, dark
glamour and sensuous alternative beauty. In a time characterized
by war, protest, and insurgency, these visual manifestations are
both a reflection of passionate times and a respite from
oppression through beauty. Look | Sharp coincides with the
launch of New York Fashion Week.

Dana Gentile
Unearthed
On view from 1/5/2012 -
2/2/2012
Global reconstruction in the wake of climate change, land use and war have incited a new urgency regarding the well-being of the planet. In Unearthed, Dana Gentile introduces a smart and witty perspective to the often heavy dialogue concerning our impact on the environment and its resources. Reclaiming once discarded materials such as vintage newspaper, magazine pages, encyclopedia imagery, and household objects, Gentile’s installation and collage works are singular reflections informed by familiar medium and environmental issues that affect us all.

Impulses of seduction
and repulsion color
Not My Idea, the first New York City solo exhibition of
contemporary artist Dawn Frasch. Employing art historical reference,
dark humor, and the absurd, Frasch works across media from painting
to drawing to gruesomely humorous narrative animation portraying her
response to the political and religious institutions that have
shaped her experience. Rather than prescribing a morality, as she
sees the institution doing, Frasch uses her work to take back
control of the female body, its functions and aesthetics.

Change
is a constant that remains certain. Throughout any transformation
whether physical, spiritual, emotional or otherwise, the body works with
the mind to traverse the human experience.
In transFIGURE,
three contemporary artists harness distinct aspects of their identities
-- from photographer to chameleon, painter to dancer and producer to
interpreter -- to inform work inspired by transformation and the figure. |
